Big brother little sister

The story big brother little sister is about two siblings who are currently living under domestic violence after their parents split up. Hema, who is the big brother, tries his hardest to keep his little sister Janey safe because their mother does not care enough for them. They attempt to run away from their family and go off to their grandmother. This story illustrates what they go through in their life.

A character I found interesting was Hema. I found him interesting because I like the way he takes care of his sister and really shows love for her better than their mother or uncle does. Although she is young, Hema still makes a good effort to keep her safe and protected, “If you get tired, I’ll give you a piggyback to the railway station.” From reading this quote I know that he cares for his little sister. I can relate to this because I also have a little sister to look after. She is younger than me and I sometimes have to be out there for her.

A message I took from the text was that domestic violence is very bad. The story portrays this problem really well and does give you a good insight of what domestic violence is like. Domestic violence is a problem in today’s society and there is not much families can do to stop this. Domestic violence impacts young children very negatively because this can be passed on to their children as well. I find this hard to relate to because I know that this doesn’t happen in my household and I am very lucky. Domestic violence is more common in poor families today around the world. I think this is an important message to take because this should be acknowledged more so that people realise that if they do end up being in a family of their own, they will try to avoid this type of violence. A point in time in the story where domestic violence is portrayed in the story is when Uncle Pera beats Hema with a belt after confronting him. “Uncle Pera had taken off his belt. Just before he began to thrash Hema with it, he kicked the door closed.”

Challenges the two main characters had to deal with (Hema and Janey) was the split up of their family and the domestic violence in their household. They were often exposed to this everyday and had to deal with it. It would’ve obviously made them sad or even affected them in other things such as education. There was a reason why they attempted an escape from the family and tried to run away to their Grandmother. Being Hema and Janey in this situation shows how brave they are that they are attempting this.

I think the text title “Big brother little sister,” is a good text title for the story because the story is actually about a big brother (Hema) and a little sister (Janey) and how they try to escape and retreat to their grandmother to escape the domestic violence in their household.

I would recommend this story to new families or new parents. I would recommend this to them because it gives them an insight of how bad domestic violence is and hopefully tells them to stay away from this type of violence since it is very bad.

HIGH ACHIEVED

Nice work, Kyle.

It was good to see you reflecting on the impact of domestic violence.

Moving ahead, look to avoid repeating the same info in a variety of ways and explore with further reflection the realisations you gained from the story.

Also look to reflect on the writer’s purpose with the text – this will help in future entries.
